General

Q. I can’t find the title I am looking for… can you help me find it?
A.
Of course we can! A lot of the products we can supply are not on the website yet because it takes a lot of time to complete the database, if there is something that is not listed and you know is in the market – please shoot us an email at sales@soasiandvd.com.au with your request and we will do our best to help you!

Q. Where can I view your privacy policy?
A.
We encourage you to view our privacy policy here.

Q. Can you inform me of the latest products and promotions?
A.
Sure! We would love to, please add your email to our mailing list on the left side of the page.

Q. I am a retailer / wholesaler and I want to order your products in large quantities, what kind of solution can you offer me?
A.
We have established a system of special accounts for these requests. Email us at info@soasiandvd.com.au or fill in the form in the Contact Us section (subject ‘Wholesale Inquiry’) with your details and intentions. We will get back to you as soon as possible and if we accept your request you will be issued with a wholesaler account entitling you to exclusive privileges.

As a wholesaler you will be issued with a special coupon that only your account can redeem, entitling you to a percentage discount based on your purchasing history. In other words, the more we recognise your ordering pattern – the greater the discount will be. We understand that as wholesalers/retailers you need the products as soon as possible, so we can arrange something more convenient than standard shipping such as courier services (depending on the situation). These are just some of the benefits of being a wholesale member.

We will welcome and consider all genuine inquiries!

Q. This site is still missing some features, and bits here and there...
A.
Thanks for noticing, the site is still new and under development. We are continually trying to improve the functionality of the website every day, that is why we value your input and feedback. Please let us now how we can improve our website and services by filling in the form in the 'Contact Us' section.

About our products

Q. Culture, what do you mean?
A.
So Asian DVD specialises in selling products from Asia. The three main cultures we offer are Chinese, Japanese and Korean. However, there are instances where we get movies made in other Asian countries that have been successful (you will find a lot of Thai movies in the Chinese section). We are unable to create an entirely new section for these odd titles yet, but maybe in the future we will!

Q. Format, what’s that?
A.
Because of the complex nature of Asian film culture, the same title is often released in different countries (for example a Chinese movie being released as a Japanese DVD or Korean DVD, or vice versa). We often get all different types of formats of the same title and we have indicated it in this field to inform you where the media was produced.

The truth behind it is…

So Asian DVD wants to make sure you know what you are buying. Often there are large price discrepancies between the same titles that have different country formats and we are aware of this and know it may confuse you. Generally the majority of the movies are Hong Kong DVD format because they are the most common, inexpensive and preferred option. Korean DVDs are quite expensive because the quality of them is generally a lot better, from the packaging to the contents of the DVD. Most Korean DVDs are packed as special editions, with 2 DVDs or more and containing many extra features, for this reason they are pricier. Until now we still cannot understand why media produced in Japan is so expensive. Their price makes them an unpopular option, so we don’t not bring in great quantities of media produced from Japan - but of course, they are available on request!

Q. Type, what is it?
A.
For your convenience, we have split up our categories into 3 types:

• Movies – containing anything from movies to TV series dramas, anime and stuff for adults.
• Music – music CDs, DVDs, karaoke, MTV, concerts and many more.
• Collectables – for fans and collectors. Has posters, books, toys, anything related to products we sell on the website.

Q. Regions, what are they?
A.
Regions are encoded into each DVD so they are compatible with the players that are sold in that region. Most DVDs sold on So Asian DVD are region-free or Region 3 (not all of our products are like that). Please make sure before purchasing any DVD that your player is compatible with playing these regions!

REGIONS:

  1. U.S.A., Canada, U.S. Territories
  2. Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
  3. Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
  4. Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
  5. Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian Subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
  6. China

Q. What is the difference between NTSC and PAL picture formats?

A. They project colour images at different frequencies, and they are NOT compatible with each other. Australia uses PAL while most of Asia use NTSC. If a NTSC format is displayed on PAL television (or vice versa), it will be in black and white, however this problem can easily be corrected by changing the settings of the DVD player to match the format.

Q. What are the different types of picture formats? (Letter Box, Widescreen and Anamorphic Widescreen)
A.
Anamorphic images can be stretched to the full length of the television screen if it is a wide screen television. This image allows for the best cinematic experience. However, letter boxing shrinks the image to fit the television screen if it cannot support anamorphic images, and it will look like a normal widescreen with black bars on the top and bottom to fill the gaps.

Q. What are the different types of audio? (DTS and Dolby Digital)
A.
DTS (Digital Theatre System) is the best type of audio channel that offers the highest quality output. However, only DTS compatible players are able to utilise this audio level. Dolby Digital is a standard on most titles and also has high quality surround output compared with standard stereo sound.

Q. What are the differences amongst SA CDs, DSD CDs and XR CDs?
A.
Super Audio CD’s utilise Direct Stream Digital (DSD), allowing for a greatly enhanced sound output that is close to original recording. Not only do they have high sound quality, but also SA CDs have a larger capacity that is used for higher quality music, text and images. However to play Super Audio discs an SA CD player must be used. Extended Resolution CDs and DSD CDs (XR CDs) have high quality output comparable to SA CDs but can be played on normal CD players.

Q. Special / Deluxe / Limited / XYZ Editions and Digitally Remastered Versions
A.
Special Editions are usually just a more luxurious version of the standard article. It may have an extra disc with bonus features, special packaging, or extra goodies such as postcards etc. Every special edition varies in content. Limited Editions are almost the same but are released in extremely small quantities; some of them might even have a serial number! But they aren’t cheap, and once they are sold out they can no longer be ordered… So if you’re a true fan better get your hands on limited editions quick! Digitally Remastered Versions are usually an old title that has been enhanced with DTS Audio and/or Widescreen visuals. For any other edition we may have that you are unsure of, don’t hesitate to ask us at sales@soasiandvd.com.au.

Q. Some of the descriptions in your products are confusing/dodgy/make no sense, what’s the deal?
A.
Sorry about that! We’re still trying to decipher most of them because a lot of titles have really bad English, of course if we had the time to watch everything one by one and make our own descriptions we would – but that’s not possible right now!

About payment and shipping

Q. When will you charge my credit card?
A.
Your credit card will be charged as soon as the order has been made. Unfortunately we cannot ship your order and then charge because the bank will not hold your card information for more than a few days.

Q. What kind of payment methods do you accept? Will you accept personal cheque or money orders?
A.
We accept most major credit cards and direct deposit. Instructions for direct deposit can be viewed after you have checked out using this payment method. Unfortunately we do not accept personal cheque or money orders at the moment.

Q. What are shipping units?
A.
The costs of shipping depend on how many shipping units are in the order. Shipping units refer to the size and weight of the item. Different size items will have different number of units, usually the bigger the item, the more units it will have because it needs a larger box to send it in. A DVD or normal single case CD is 1 shipping unit, while thicker DVD and double cased CDs are 2. Box sets and special editions are usually 5 or more because of their irregular dimensions, meaning a custom sized box might have to be made to ship these items because they do not fit in standard boxes. This applies to all collectable items too. We have tried to make the shipping system as simple as possible, but if you still have the need to enquire further, do not hesitate to contact us.

Q. What are your shipping costs?

A. Take advantage of our simple method and low shippping costs immediately and notice the savings!

Shipping costs are as follows:

  • 1-5 SU $3.50 $7.00

Q. What options do you have for international customers?

A. Recently, we've had an increasingly good response from international customers. However, the shipping costs are very expensive and the time that it takes for the order to be delivered by standard airmail may be too long if it is a large order. Therefore we advise international customers who are purchasing in large quantities to advise us first before checking out. We will most likely manually calculate the shipping costs that include tracking and insurance, and will charge your credit card separately. This will avoid paying too much/too little, or receiving your order late and damaged... So please, all international customers buying in large quantity - please advise us first!
